Rhythmic Elements in Jazz

Rhythm is what makes things move, your foot, your leg, perhaps your whole body.  Without rhythm, the world would be a very boring place.  Our heart holds the very essence of rhythm; Pulse.  Without it, the world would be a very dead place.  As a musician, you have to develop a good sense of pulse, if you don't, you will find it very difficult to play with other people.  Jazz, because of it's African roots, has rhythms that purposely go with and against the pulse.  This creates 'groove'.  The most important 'groove' in the jazz world is the Swing Groove.  However, this is only the tip of the iceberg.  Jazz borrows from many different cultures and so you have to be well versed in Latin American rhythms, Caribbean Rhythms, South American Rhythms and European Classical Rhythms.
